Safety

Safety is our number one priority at Heritage Gas.  The safety of our customers, our employees, the environment and the communities we live in guides the way we do business every day.

Natural gas is one of the safest forms of energy available.  It is widely-used around the world, throughout Canada and now here in Nova Scotia. In communities where it's available, natural gas is the preferred energy source for schools, hospitals, churches, shopping centres, and other public buildings.

Natural gas is 40% lighter than air; therefore, it dissipates into the air in the unlikely event of a leak.  Propane, on the other hand, is heavier than air and pools on the ground after a leak. Natural gas also has built-in safeguards - an odourant (like the smell of rotten eggs) is added to the gas so it can be easily detected if a leak does occur.

Three levels of government stringently regulate the transport and use of natural gas and the safety procedures Heritage Gas adheres to are second-to-none. Your natural gas source is safely tucked away underground, so it's virtually problem-free. That's why insurance companies are more inclined to give you lower insurance rates if you use natural gas and eliminate the potential of leaking oil tanks.

Over 15 million Canadians use natural gas safely to heat their homes and businesses. Our industry has an excellent safety record and all natural gas appliances must pass rigorous tests before they are approved for sale in Canada.

Natural gas is one of the safest and most reliable fuels available. Like all energy forms, it must be used properly. For safe, efficient use of natural gas in your home, it is important that you respect natural gas, know how to use it properly and follow manufacturers' directions for using and taking care of natural gas appliances. By properly caring for your appliances, you'll help ensure on-going safe and effective operation.

If You Smell Natural Gas...

Heritage Gas adds an odour that smells like rotten eggs to natural gas so that you'll quickly know if there's a problem.

  • Leave the house or building if the natural gas odour is strong.
  • Then call the Heritage Gas emergency line at:
